The Center for Molecular Medicine runs several projects aimed at advancing our understanding of the genetic and environmental factors behind rheumatoid arthritis. In a large-scale study involving more than 3000 patients conducted in collaboration with groups in the US and Singapore, scientists identified new genes involved in the etiology of the disease. A detailed understanding of the factors behind rheumatoid arthritis opens new avenues for diagnosis and drug development. The use of Sweden’s unique patient register, combined with cutting-edge gene technology, was vital for achieving the results.
The center has recently received a major grant to establish a leading international center in chronic inflammation, which is the pathobiological process that links inflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
