Professor Schnürer is a specialist in the biology and ecology of micro-fungi, with particular focus on interactions between moulds, yeasts and lactic acid bacteria. His research programmes include developing generic knowledge and technology for the safety assessment, fermentation and formulation of novel microorganisms for environmental applications, e.g. biocontrol, biopreservation, bioremediation and biofuels and also research program on sustainable biofuel production.
Professor Schnürer is active in translational activities, connecting university research to industrial development. He has four licensed patents and has founded one company, Olligon AB working on fungal food biotechnology, that was later sold to Lantmännen. He is a board member of SLU Holding and MicaFun AB (IPR-company of a scientists consortium).
