Stockholm Brain Institute

Stockholm Brain Institute (SBI) is a consortium for Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience, joining three leading Swedish Universities; Karolinska Institutet, Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, in the endeavor to enhance the understanding of higher brain functions. SBI engages 10 high-level research groups, representing key scientific areas from life and medical sciences, behavioral sciences and technical sciences. The objective for SBI is to apply a systems neurobiology approach to higher brain functions; from genes, cells and neural networks to cognitive functions and behavior. This approach requires a broad set of skills extending from neurobiology and neuroimaging to psychology and clinical epidemiology. In collaboration with successful industrial partners from the biomedical and biotechnical industry, and with public partners providing health care, the new knowledge will be used to develop biomarkers and new principles for prevention and intervention. Apart from funding of the universities, SBI has been appointed a Strategic Centre by Swedish Foundation of Strategic Research (SSF) and a Berzelii Centre by VR/VINNOVA (Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems).
